P a g e | 29 COLLEGE COMPOSITION 1 – ENG 105 (NCAA) COLLEGE COMPOSITION 2 – ENG 106 (NCAA) COLLEGE INTRO TO LITERATURE – LIT101 (NCAA) CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT (Purchase of Textbook Required) Course Length: 1 Year Credits: 3 LCHS, 9 WITCC Grade Level : 12 This class consists of three, trimester-long courses. Comp 1 covers the basics of short-essay college writing. Comp 2 focuses on research-paper writing. During the composition sections, students will do argumentative, comparison-contrast, definition, descriptive, narrative, and process writing. The writing process, correct English usage, and sentence structures will be emphasized. The literature portion will cover literary terms, short stories, poetry, and dramas. Grades will be comprised of scores from quizzes, tests, and literary analysis essays. CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Elective/Required: Elective Grade Level: 11, 12 (10 th grade students who feel they can handle the reading and writing load of a literature course are also welcome.) Students in this course will read late twentieth century and twenty-first century literature of various genres including, but not limited to historical fiction, fantasy, memoir, biography, science fiction, and suspense/thriller. Students will analyze the components of each genre and apply them to the assigned book. Students taking Contemporary Literature can expect a writing component to this class as well. CREATIVE WRITING (NCAA) Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Elective/Required: Required Option Grade Level: 11, 12 Creative Writing is an elective course for juniors and seniors who enjoy writing or who want to polish their writing skills. In a workshop type of environment, the student will write various forms of narrative based prose and poetry. Core goals include the development of writing, editing, and technology skills. The student will leave this class with an understanding of Microsoft Word 97 and PowerPoint 97. FRESHMAN ENGLISH (NCAA) Course Length: 1 Year Credits: 2 Grade Level: 9 This course is required of all freshmen. The class is devoted to the study of literature and informational texts, writing, vocabulary, grammar, usage, speaking and listening. Special emphasis is given to the study of Romeo and Juliet. JUNIOR ENGLISH (NCAA) Course Length: 1 Year Credits: 2 Grade Level: 11 This course is required of all juniors. The class is designed to develop students’ facility in literature, writing, vocabulary, grammar, usage, and speaking and listening skills. Special emphasis is given to the study of A Midsummer Night’s Dream , classic and contemporary stories, and argumentative research paper writing.
