P a g e | 30 LITERATURE OF A GENRE Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Grade Level: 9,10,11,12 Drama Literature & Performance is a one-semester course open to all students who are interested in theater, whether they like performing on stage or want to learn about behind-the-scenes stagecraft. No previous theater experience is necessary. Students who want to improve self-confidence and prefer to work in a class that stresses group projects and performance are encouraged to take this course. Daily warm-ups add a fun active participation element to learning. Some of the theater disciplines covered include dramatic literature, theater history, acting, costumes, and simple set construction. This course does not meet the English requirement for graduation. NEWSWRITING Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Grade Level: 11, 12 News writing may be taken by juniors or seniors for one semester only. Students will learn about the history of journalism in America, the responsibilities of a journalist, the elements of news, standard news article structure, interviewing techniques, and editorial structure. Students will also be responsible for producing the school newspaper, The Dog Pound . This course does not meet the English requirement for graduation. SENIOR COMPOSITION (NCAA) Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Elective/Required: Required Option Grade Level: 12 Senior composition is designed to prepare seniors for independent college writing. While writing for a variety of purposes (including research), students will study sentence, paragraph, and essay structure. They will also work to improve editing and vocabulary skills. SOPHOMORE ENGLISH (NCAA) Course Length: 1 Year Credits: 2 Grade Level: 10 This course is required of all sophomores. The class is devoted to the study of literature and information texts, writing, vocabulary, grammar, usage, speaking, and listening. Special emphasis is given to the study of informative research paper writing and persuasive speaking. WORLD LITERATURE Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Elective/Required: Required Option Grade Level: 11, 12 World Literature is a course designed to introduce a variety of cultures and their literature to students. We will read genres ranging from mythology, folk tales, and legends to non-fiction stories and poetry. The class includes literature from Asian, Greek, Roman, Arabic, African, and European cultures. This is a good class for students who enjoy history and want to learn more about the common story patterns that many cultures share. YEARBOOK Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Grade Level : 12 A limited number of seniors are selected each year to produce the LCHS yearbook, The Bark. Students who are interested must be highly motivated, self-driven, organized, and hardworking. Computer literacy (such as Adobe Photoshop) is an advantage but not a requirement. This course does not meet the English requirement for graduation.
