P a g e | 32 HOUSING Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 This is an elective course where you will study the many aspects of housing. Units covered include housing styles, interior design as it relates to the elements and principles of design, floor plans, purchasing furniture and evaluating the basic home. This course will help you understand your housing needs, develop your own ideas and have confidence when dealing with housing information in your future. We visit several local homes for tours and plan decorating for three rooms in a home. SINGLE LIVING Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Grade Level: 11, 12 Single Living is a comprehensive class designed to help you meet the challenges of daily life with confidence. It provides you with the basic information you need to balance work and family life in today’s world. It will help you develop a range of skills related to communication, finding housing, clothing care, financial skills and food & nutrition. TEXTILE ARTS Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 This course places an emphasis on basic sewing techniques. Weekly demonstrations of required techniques serve as building blocks to a self-selected project. Techniques of the class will include machine embroidery, applique, cut-work, iron-on transfers, tie dye, painting, bead work, garment making, knitting, crocheting, household décor, quilting, etc. Supplies are furnished by the student . FOREIGN LANGUAGES (Elective Credits) The majority of people your age in the developed countries of the world speak at least two languages – it is expected and it comes naturally. Your school offers you an opportunity to learn Spanish. By learning another language, you learn about your own language and culture through perspective. SPANISH 1 (NCAA) Course Length: 1 Year Credits: 2 Prerequisite: For 9 th grade a proficient standard score in Iowa Assessments or other standardized test in Language Arts score. Lower than this makes Spanish 1 a difficult course for already busy incoming 9 th graders. Waiting until later in your high school career will be an advantage. Grade Level: 9,10,11,12 A good background in English is helpful for this course, usually needing a "C" or better. In this course you will study basic words, phrases, and grammar of the Spanish language. We will emphasize spoken communication and listening throughout the program, as well as begin work on reading and writing in Spanish. The customs and cultures of Spanish-speaking nations will also be explored. SPANISH 2 (NCAA) Course Length: 1 Year Credits: 2 Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish 1 Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 An elective full-year course to help you further develop an understanding of the Spanish language. Speaking Spanish in the class is greatly encouraged as well as the continuation of listening, writing and reading. Your studies will be expanded from the textbook to additional writing, TV and literature to increase your understanding of Spanish. Your future job opportunities in many fields could be greatly increased by studying Spanish.
