Bulldog Highlights Hello, Bulldogs! The month of February is a busy time for the Le Mars Community School District. Our winter sports season is starting to get ready for tournament time and our music and speech programs are participating in many different competitions. Our ro- botics club has also been busy with various competitions. All of these programs are repre- senting the community of Le Mars in great fashion; exhibiting hard work, strong character, and great success! It won’t be long until we will be getting ready for spring activities. The Le Mars Community School District Foundation’s scholarship campaign is currently underway. The Foundation, which formed in 1991 under the direction of the late, former superintendent, Roy “Red” Messerole, has partnered with generous contributors to award over $800,000 in scholarships to date. Last year alone, 56 donors awarded 117 scholar- ships totaling $62,500. A special thank you goes to all who contributed last year. I also want to thank the members of last year’s scholarship committee: Kelsey Langel, Larry Pe- tersen, Glendon Peterson, Don Lake, Denise Anthony, Steve Wick, Steve Collins, and Joe Sitzmann. If you are interested in forming a new scholarship or contributing to the general scholarship fund of the Foundation, please feel free to contact Lisa Eisma at the central of- fice at (712) 546-4155. The Le Mars Community School District Foundation also awards the Decades of Excel- lence Crystal Bell Teacher of the Year Award. Nomination materials for this award will be available in all district buildings by February 1, 2018. Anyone can nominate a teacher for this award, co-sponsored by the Le Mars Community School District Foundation and the Le Mars Community Alumni Association. Nominations are due Friday, March 23, 2018. The award recipient is honored at the Foundation’s Annual Banquet along with the em- ployee of the month recipients, 25-year employees, and the top 5% of the graduating class. The banquet will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, in the lower level of the Le Mars Convention Center. I would like to thank everyone for the great support you provide Le Mars Community Schools. As mentioned, the Foundation does an excellent job of providing scholarships for graduates, as well as a capital campaign to help fund the stadium renovation project. LEEP and PTO have been great partners providing support for teachers and students. T and I Boosters do a great job of raising funds to support much needed technical programs, and our Music and Athletic Boosters are a strong source of support for those programs. The community of Le Mars does a great job of supporting these organizations, and it is much appreciated. Your support provides help to educate our students for an ever-changing world. Thank you! This year marks the 30th anniversary of the National Geographic Society Geography Bee. Le Mars Community Middle School has participated for the last 15 years. Classroom com- petitions were held in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade social studies classes. The top eight scorers then participated in the school bee. The top scorers included: Mason Gengler, Dominic Varenhorst, Caleb Dreckman, Daniel Vacura, Wade Fisher, Kylee Regennitter, Katelyn Koster, and Katie Cunningham.
