P a g e | 31 FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCE (Elective Credits) 21 ST CENTURY FOODS Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Grade Level : 9,10,11,12 This class is for the student that wants to learn about nutrition, healthy eating practices, and healthy food preparation techniques. You will be introduced to equipment needs, food safety, how foods meet our nutritional needs, & efficient food preparation techniques. Evaluation will be written and performance based. CHILD DEVELOPMENT Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Grade Level : 9,10,11,12 Child Development is an elective course for high school students in which they will learn how a child develops before and after birth. This course can help to prepare students planning to enter medical, child care, teaching or social work careers. Those students not pursuing a career in the above areas can benefit also by learning future parenting skills. Working with children is a part of this class. CULINARY ARTS Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Prerequisite: Foods & Nutrition or 21 st Century Foods Grade Level : 10, 11, 12 This is an advanced foods class designed to expand your knowledge and experience in working with foods. Students will have the opportunity to work with the modern equipment including commercial appliances. Importance will be placed on cooking techniques, recipe trends, food preparation skills, gourmet cooking, meal planning, and meal service. FAMILY LIVING Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Grade Level: 11, 12 Family Living is an elective course designed to help students learn about and improve family relationships now and in the future. Communication skills will be a vital part in the class as we cover units on choosing a lifestyle and marriage partner, building and blending a marriage, balancing work and family, types of families and their special problems, decision making, divorce, family stress, aging, death and dying. FASHION MECHANDISING Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 This class is based on all aspects of the apparel industry. Activities include computer style analysis, computer virtual makeover, window displays, fabric chemical testing, tours, guest speakers, and interviews with business people and the media. No sewing is required. FOODS & NUTRITION Course Length: 1 Semester Credits: 1 Grade Level: 9,10,11,12 This class is basically a laboratory and consumer class. After studying the background of each type of food, students will prepare either suggested foods or foods of their own choice. Food preparation techniques and safety and sanitation are emphasized. Major units are designed around different food categories and will include food careers. Evaluation will be written and performance based, including technique and final product.
